About

Saxon Hornett is an award winning Tasmanian multimedia composer who has produced original music for film, theater, advertisements, art-installations and documentaries. Saxon has been commissioned by the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (TSO), Blundstone Boots, Oi Studios, the Tasmanian West Coast Council, DoMaur Production Incorporated as well as various independent directors and artists.

In college Saxon won the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Student Composition Competition, followed by the Clarence Festival Jazz Scholarship. He was awarded his school’s premier composition award, the Clarice Tegg Prize, and received the Don Kay Scholarship to pursue composition at the University of Tasmania.

Saxon’s love of film, video games and later, theatre scores led him into the production of music for media with the soundtrack to the 2017 short-film Perfume being his first project. Saxon composed his first full length theatrical soundtrack for the 2018 play, Picnic at Hanging Rock, staged in Burnie by DoMaur Productions; the score winning the 2019 Tasmanian Community Theater Judges’ Award

Greatly enjoying the collaborative experience of theater, Saxon composed a seventy minute soundtrack for DoMaur’s 2019 production of Fahrenheit 451, nominated for the 2020 Tasmanian Theater Awards for best score and sound design. The Fahrenheit soundtrack became a practical project for his honours exegesis exploring how sound textures enhance emotional meaning in theatrical scores, receiving first class honours.

Forever West Of Center was a four minute hybrid orchestral work for a tourism commercial promoting the Tasmanian West Coast’s natural beauty. The advert’s success gave Saxon recognition as an ‘emerging’ composer, resulting in Blundstone Boots and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra commissioning an orchestral work for an international advertising campaign celebrating Blundstone’s 150th anniversary. This led to a further commission from the TSO to compose a eight minute orchestral work developing the Blundstone advertisement’s thematic material.

Saxon has also composed a sound bed for Family Based Care Tasmania’s TV Advertisement, produced a twenty minute soundtrack for the documentary Point of Contention, been engaged as a assistant film composer in the short film, Karen, directed by George Underwood through Wide Angle Tasmania, and has arranged, orchestrated and produced music for singer-songwriters: Monique Brumby, Mia Palencia, Jackson Simpson and Benjamin White.

Recently Saxon has completed his Masters of Music in Interactive Composition from VCA and has been working on larger advertising campaigns, theatrical productions and solo works. (see portfolio for further details)
